This class will actually be two classes in one. I will be teaching general science and study skills at the same time. The class will be taught in a multi-sensory format to accommodate all type of learners. For the science portion, I will be using the Apologia Curriculum - Physical, earth science topics. We will cover history of science, scientific inquiry, experimental interpretation, applied science and technology, the history of life, foundations of geology, fossil record, uniformitarianism and catastrophism, definition of life, classifying life, the human body, energy and life, and the human digestive, circulatory, respiratory and immune systems. We will be doing lab experiments. Each child will need to purchase a lab book, more information at registration.
For the study skills portion, I will be using Quantum techniques as described at www.learningforum.com . I will teach a variety of note taking techniques, starting with graphic organizers to outlining with mind mapping strategies. I will teach how to organize information, how to learn it effectively and how to retrieve it for test taking.
Note: I will assign weekly homework. There will be periodic multiple choice tests and there will be three papers due throughout the year. Each will be less than two pages. Each child will be expected to do a simple science project near the end of the year.

I have been home schooling for seven years. Before I started home schooling, I was a Software Engineer with Hewlett Packard for six years. Before that I taught computer classes at Xerox Corporation. I have also taught History at another Co-op. I have a B.A. in Humanities from Michigan State University. I am especially interested in all types of learners including students with disabilities.
