This semester we will explore Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell and Shadow Spinner by Susan Fletcher.
This class is based on Progeny Press Literature Studies. These studies are solid and foundational as they encourage the student to think about and internalize the books read. Students easily learn to understand the characters and plots of the books. Studies are Biblically based and include vocabulary studies each week. Studies of basic literary tools and styles are also covered.
Students will read the assigned chapters, complete their study pages, and write letters to other students in the class in which they will discuss a different aspect of the book that will encourage them to connect what they read to themselves, other literature, or the world around them. The writing assignment will vary from week to week and will not be assigned while students are working on a long-term project.
We will discuss the chapters read in class and use various games and activities to extend the understanding and enjoyment of the book, vocabulary, or literary elements. A project will be assigned to be shared with the class at the conclusion of each title read.
My goal is to encourage a love of reading in each child and to develop an environment where they can freely discuss their experience with the books they read. Students will learn to respect and explore the opinions of others as they discover that view point is shaped by an individual’s life experiences. It is my hope that in sharing their observations, their individual views will broaden and develop to include new ideas and enhance critical thinking. In addition to reading, writing, and discussion, I will incorporate games, hands-on activities, and time period exploration when applicable. Students need to have the following before the first class meeting:
Eager Learning Attitude

JAbout the Teacher: I have been homeschooling for 9 years and always enjoy learning right along with my student. I have two children in college and one homeschooler who is attending Heritage. I taught the Exploring Literature class at Heritage in the 2006-07 school year, and Great Games Galore in the Winter 2007 semester. My homeschooling experience has taught me that my activity-based teaching style benefits student understanding and retention—students won’t be spending much time sitting in this class!
Payment due monthly. Copy/Material fee provides individual copies of Progeny Press Study Guide, any other copies for class, and materials for games/activities. $3.00 per child/per class, plus $8.00 Copy/Material fee.
