Teacher: Kristin Campbell

Students: Minimum 5- Maximum 15
Language Arts

Description:
The students will take a journey through our American history using literature as their guide. They will read essays, letters, speeches, sermons, short stories, and novels in an effort to explore our American literary heritage. We will start in the colonies and march as far into modern times as we can. The students will look at the way literature shapes the thinking of an era and how the thoughts of the day challenge the literature. The students will be reflecting on the literature that they read through a Christian world view and will be expected to document their thoughts, reflections and ideas. The students will be exposed to a variety of writers and some with thoughts and ideas very different from their own. One goal of this class will be to prepare the students for college and expose them to writers and writings that they will encounter both in their everyday life as well as in college. There will be a lot of reading and writing but this will hopefully begin their quest for future study and I trust that they will form a life-long love of words, thoughts, ideas and books.

The students will be compiling a portfolio of their work as we go through this class. It will contain biographies of the authors we study, their journals of reactions to the literature, classroom discussion questions, tests and their papers. This will be a great tool for them to use in future study.

  • We will be reading several novels:
  • The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
  • The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper
  • Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe
  • The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane
  • The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
  • My Antonia by Willa Cather
  • The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
  • To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  • The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway
  • The Pearl by John Steinbeck

Please call with any questions. I will be flexible with the minimum and maximum number of students in the class.

Required Materials:
I will be putting together a binder of one semester’s handouts, assignment sheets, and journal prompts. Each student will just purchase this binder. I am not yet sure of the cost. Access to the Internet (let me know if this is a problem or hindrance)
