This course will introduce students to the lives and works of great artists such as Michelangelo, da Vinci, Raphael, Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Bloch, Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cassatt, Van Gogh, and great composers such as Vivaldi, Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, and Rachmaninoff.
Students will be trained—then challenged—to recognize key works and nuances of style both visually and audibly. Background will be given regarding the history, culture, and eras within which various artists created.
A collection of resources will be used such as: Discovering Great Artists, God & the History of Art (Stebbing), The Spiritual Lives of Great Composers, Meet the Masters, Where Art Thou (the game), Music & Moments with the Masters, The Story of Painting by Sister Wendy Beckett, Childsize Masterpieces, and Focus on Composers.
Students will be given an overview of the development of art and music, and may work with timelines, art notebooks, and postcard-sized prints. Although this is an art and music history class rather than a “mechanics of art instruction class,” a portion of the course may also be devoted to experimenting with art projects in keeping with the style and methods of masters studied.
Parents are always welcome to drop in and learn with students!
