Subject: Foreign Language
Class: Prima Latina Elementary Latin
Grades: 3rd -- 5th
Teacher : Stacy Farrell
Contact: 847-841-1090
Students: Minimum 5 - Maximum 15

Description:
"The early Christians knew and studied the Greek Scriptures in their own native tongue. But as the knowledge of the biblical languages diminished among the common people, a darkness crept over professed Christianity. The people became more and more dependent upon religious professionals, and those professionals became less and less accountable to the people."
Harvey & Laurie Bluedorn, Teaching the Trivium, p. 108

Since about 60 percent of our modern English vocabulary derives from Latin, and ten percent from Greek, our thinking greatly expands when we learn Greek and Latin word roots!

Through song, flashcards, and other methods, students will learn an assortment of Greek and Latin word roots, the languages of science, history, and law as well as the sound and formation of the New Testament Greek alphabet. This class will start its participants on the road to understanding the Scriptures in their original language one baby step at a time!
Regarding the elementary Latin program used (from the Memoria Press website):
Prima Latina was developed for young children who are still becoming familiar with English grammar and wish to learn Latin at a slower pace. The program provides 25 lessons, each including a grammar skill, 5 vocabulary words with corresponding English derivatives, a practical Latin phrase, and one line of a prayer that is learned in totality over five lessons…Prima Latina is the perfect choice for those who would like to start Latin early and lay the foundation of a rigorous language arts program.

Parents are always welcome to drop in and learn with students!

CourseRequirements
Prima Latina student text, 3 x 5” index cards, and a white three-ringed notebook.

Subject: Foreign Language
Class: Introduction to Latin: Latina Christiana
Grades: 3rd -- 5th
Teacher : Stacy Farrell
Contact: 847-841-1090
Students: Minimum 5 - Maximum 15

Description:
“There are three reasons Latin has long been considered the one master subject before which all others must bow. First, Latin teaches English better than English teaches English….

“Second, the mental discipline Latin instills in students makes it the ideal foreign language to study….Latin is systematic, rigorous, analytic…clearly superior to other languages in this regard. Like English, modern languages are ‘lax and individualistic,’ reflecting the modern temper of those who speak them. Thinking that you can get the same benefit out of studying them is…‘like supposing that the muscles can be developed by changing from one chair to the other.’

“Third, Latin is the ideal tool for the transmission of cultural literacy. Latin is…the mother tongue of Western civilization—a language that incorporated the best ideas of the ancient Greeks, and which then, after the conversion of Rome, put them into the service of Christian truth.”

Each lesson in Latina Christiana consists of ten vocabulary words, a set of grammar forms, and a Latin saying. Exercises reinforce memory work, teach systematic grammar and provide simple translation. Prayers, songs, conversational Latin, history lessons, maps, and games add interest and motivation.

CourseRequirements
Latina Christiana student text, 3 x 5” index cards, and a white three-ringed notebook.
